In the latest edition of Crain’s Business Journal, Bob Peters, Managing Director in the Tax Services practice, is quoted discussing the “future of sales tax collection” in regards to the City of Chicago’s new cloud tax.
Chicago has begun taxing cloud-based services stating, “that the existing 9 percent lease tax applies to both buyers and sellers of cloud-computing services in Chicago.”
Bob shared that given the new tax liabilities, “one Fortune 500 company closed its branch office of about 20 employees in Chicago to avoid the tax.”
