Reshmi Khurana, Managing Director and Head of Southeast Asia in the Business Intelligence and Investigations practice at Kroll, a division of Duff & Phelps, spoke to The Business Times about the importance of startups focusing on good corporate governance from the early stages of setting up the company. Corporate governance should be a part of the culture, and not an afterthought. However, startups are often focused on growth during the initial phase, the valuation of their business and raising funds. This means sometimes corporate governance is not made a priority at this stage.
"It can hinder their ability to scale up their business and also constrain fund raising, as larger investors in subsequent rounds of fund raising – Series C and D – may look at these issues very closely,” Reshmi said.
