Professional Brings Two Decades of Experience in Cyber Risk Assessments and Technical Security Testing; Formerly Led a Big Four’s Global Centre of Excellence for Ethical Hacking
Kroll, a global leader in risk mitigation, investigations, compliance, cyber resilience, security, and incident response solutions, today announced the appointment of William Rimington as an associate managing director in its Cyber Risk practice, based in London. Over the course of a prominent 20-year career in technology, risk, and cyber security, Rimington has significantly advanced the science and art of technical security testing and the critical role it plays in developing, implementing, and validating security defenses that can stand up to ever-evolving cyber attacks.
“William is a forward-thinking professional who thrives on helping organizations anticipate and mitigate complex cyber risks,” said Andrew Beckett, Managing Director and EMEA Cyber Risk Practice Leader. “I am confident his ability to address both the technical and human facets of today’s most intractable cyber risks will translate into pragmatic solutions that will help clients prevent, detect, and recover from highly sophisticated and evolving attacks.”
“I am delighted that William is now part of Kroll’s team of talented cyber professionals,” said Jason Smolanoff, Senior Managing Director and Global Cyber Risk Practice Leader for Kroll. “His unique perspective and experience will enrich Kroll’s industry-leading cyber capabilities and support our commitment to providing clients with services as diverse and multidimensional as their challenges.”
Rimington joins Kroll from the London office of a Big Four accounting firm, where he most recently led the firm’s Global Center of Excellence for Ethical Hacking. In this role, he led the UK technical security testing practice and coordinated the efforts, strategy, training and R&D of the global networks’ penetration testing capability. During this time, Rimington was instrumental in the firm becoming a global member of CREST, the preeminent accreditation and certification body for providers of penetration testing, cyber incident response and threat intelligence services. Consequently, Rimington’s firm became a UK-approved provider of services for CBEST, an initiative between CREST and the UK Financial Authorities that was launched to help UK financial services organizations, and other critical infrastructure organizations, protect their core systems against cyber attacks.
In addition to his expertise in technical security testing, Rimington has led security reviews within organizations across diverse industries and geographies that covered all facets of the people and process agendas as well as the underlying technology. He is especially adept at communicating current cyber security issues and themes with client executive boards, audit committees, and at external speaking events. His achievements during his time with the firm also include the creation and development of a data analytics practice in the London office and the automation of several manual playbooks into a highly efficient digital solution used in testing security operation centers. Rimington started his career in 1999 with LogicaCMG (now CGI), where he worked in software development and systems implementation.
Rimington earned a Master of Science degree in Information Systems at Portsmouth University and a Bachelor of Arts degree, with honors, in Archaeology at Durham University. Rimington has also been involved in training initiatives such as the UK Cyber Security Challenge, where he drew upon the expertise of contributors from across the UK, France, and Asia-Pacific.
