Prior to joining Kroll, Dan served as a principal consultant at PA Consulting, where he advised clients on their data strategy, setting out how best to use the data available to them to provide the most value for their business. Before that, Dan served at Forensic Risk Alliance and in EY’s UK Forensics practice.
Prior to his consulting career, Dan worked as a civil servant in the UK government, using the insights from data to advise on policy and operational decisions across government departments, including at one point leading the data analytics work in a Home Office Anti-Corruption Unit.
Dan advises clients under regulatory enforcement and investigation, analyzing large and disparate sources of data to provide an accurate picture of historical misconduct and non-compliance to put the clients in a strong position with the regulator. For example, with a major UK retail bank subject to regulatory enforcement, Dan led a team providing analysis, visualization and modeling of four million datapoints of historical change in the retail business process, enabling the bank’s counsel to have an accurate, informed negotiation with the regulator.
In addition, Dan has worked with clients in financial services to build, deliver and operate, and advise on compliance analytics platforms; for example, with a tier one global investment bank, he led the design, build and operation of a trader surveillance system for the foreign exchange and commodities trading operation. As part of this work, he collaborated with both the front office and compliance teams to develop algorithms that effectively detect conduct risk and, at the same time, produce few false positive alerts, resulting in a low “compliance burden” for the organization.
Beyond compliance matters, Dan has a strong track record of advising experts and counsel in litigations and disputes, using the insight he derives from data. For example, Dan supported the expert witness in a cross-border dispute between two large public sector bodies, leading a team producing visualizations, modeling and analysis of five million commodity shipments and prices, enabling the client to take a strong, informed position.
Dan holds a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Huddersfield. He also holds an M.Sc. from Cranfield University and a B.Sc. from Leeds University.
